November 4:
Off Center presents
Playmakers
Playmakers is a monthly series presented by Off Center for the Dramatic Arts that features both directed and cold readings of new works by local playwrights. The aim is to offer a venue for playwrights to share, test, and develop their work while at the same time fostering communication and collaboration within the theater community and encouraging artistic experiment.
Each night will consist of one directed reading and up to three cold readings.
The plays will be no more than 20 pages (or 25 minutes), though excerpts are acceptable.
The plays may be cast in advance, but will not be rehearsed.
All readings will be scheduled in advance.
Each month a different pair of theater artists will volunteer to select one of the cold readings to then present as a directed piece the following month. These playmakers will assemble a cast and team (if necessary) and develop the work – without the playwright’s involvement. The directed readings will provide opportunities for theater artists to practice their craft separate from the demands of production, as well as give playwrights a chance to see their work interpreted.
The format allows for and encourages those involved to experiment beyond their normal roles. Actors can direct; writers can perform; directors can write.
What have you.
There will be no open discussions or feedback sessions. However, audiences will be encouraged to leave comments, questions, & criticisms – cards & pencils provided. Further feedback may be offered through e-mail and individual conversations.
The series is open to the public. Suggested donation $3-5.
The scheduled playwrights are:
11/4:
Seth Jarvis
Aaron Masi
Steve Goldberg
Geeda Searfoorce
12/16:
Emer Pond Feeney
Bruce Campbell
James Moore
& a directed reading presented by: Chris Caswell & Jordan Gullikson

STEALING FROM WORK:
Episode II - Son of the Bride of the Shadow Goes to Camp, in 3D!
The Stealing from Work gang is back with a full show of original sketch comedy written by Angie Albeck and Marianne DiMascio. Join actors Chris Caswell, Kevin Christopher, Marianne DiMascio, and Geeda Searfoorce for a fast-paced evening of lunacy and lampoonery. With each sketch the actors deftly transform into a different set of extraordinary characters, alternately spoofing contemporary film and culture and the political issues of our time. Stealing from Work’s sophomore production takes on familiar and new topics, all with a local flavor.
October 31st and November 1st at 8:00 p.m., November 2nd at 5:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., and November 3rd at 5:00 p.m. Tickets are $15.
Tickets may be purchased by calling 86-FLYNN, online at www.flynntix.org, or at the door.
Additional information is available at www.facebook.com/StealingFromWork.
Leave the kids at home. Stealing from Work is immature humor for mature audiences only.

Searfoorce, Chris Caswell, and Marianne DiMascio.

More about Stealing from Work
Albeck and DiMascio recently received a Vermont Arts Endowment Grant from the Vermont Community Foundation. Reactions from the sold-out run of their first production included, “I laughed constantly! The sketches poked great fun at the PC do-goodism of privileged white Vermonters and, overall, a sort of wry and ridiculous (and completely outrageous!!) postmodern feminism,” and “Thank you for being so brilliant, poignant, and naming all of the everyday absurdities we regularly fail to acknowledge. YES YES YES!”
October 31st and November 1st at 8:00 p.m., November 2nd at 5:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., and November 3rd at 5:00 p.m. Tickets are $15.

THE TECHNIQUE:
Sanford Meisner was an American actor/teacher who began his career with the Group Theatre in the 1930s. He eventually formed the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York City, considered to be one of the finest acting schools in the world. Meisner created a technique that develops the actor’s instincts, sharpens their sensitivities, and enriches the actor’s most important tool, their imagination. The technique begins with “the repetition exercise,” a deceptively simple improvisatory exercise based on listening and responding to your partner in the moment. In each class, different elements—circumstances, character and location, and the performance of various “activities” (such as handling objects) are added to the basic structure of the exercise. Meisner work is an excellent technique for increasing an actor’s spontaneity, essential to actors working in any
medium—film, theater and television. The technique also eliminates self-consciousness, which is helpful both as an actor and in your life. You
do not need experience as an actor to take this workshop, just a sense of commitment to the process.
THE INSTRUCTOR:
Carole Zucker has been called “Montreal’s Acting Guru” (Montreal Mirror), and a “Muse for Aspiring Actors” in The Citizen. She taught Cinema Studies at Concordia University (Montreal, Canada) for over thirty years, and her area of expertise is performance. Zucker was the first university professor in Canada to design a course specifically devoted to film acting. She will resume teaching acting to Film Production students at Champlain College in Burlington this coming year.
Dr. Zucker is a trained actor, having studied at The Neighborhood Playhouse, and with Uta Hagen at the HB Studios, both in New York City. She has performed in numerous off-off Broadway productions and in regional theatre throughout North America. Zucker has previously taught a workshop in
Montreal since the 1990s and in Burlington, courses on The Meisner Technique and Scene Study at the Flynn Center for the Performing Arts and Off Center for Dramatic Arts.
She is the author of seven books, including Figures of Light (Plenum, 1995,) which features interviews with 21 American actors and directors, including Tommy Lee Jones; John Lithgow; Sydney Pollack; Christine Lahti, et al. This was followed by In the Company of Actors (A & C Black, 1999), a collection of interviews with 16 British and Irish actors including Dame Helen Mirren; Sir Nigel Hawthorne, Dame Judi Dench, Sir Alan Bates, Stephen Rea; Fiona Shaw; Janet McTeer; Helen Mirren; Simon Callow, Dame Eileen Atkins, and Miranda Richardson. She has spent the better part of three decades studying and teaching acting in North America and in England, and is considered one of the foremost authorities on the acting process. Conversations with Actors on Film, Television and Stage Performance, a collection of actor interviews (Heinemann Drama, 2002). Zucker published The Cinema of Neil Jordan: Dark Carnival with Wallflower Press (London, 2008), and her book Interviews: Neil Jordan has recently been published by The University of Mississippi Press. She is the winner of numerous arts grants from the Canadian government for her work on performance. Zucker has just received a fellowship to study the archives at The University of Texas at Austin, of the famous acting teacher Stella Adler, for a biography called The Work of Stella Adler: Teacher, Philosopher, and Creator.

Off center and no walls
present
Waiting for Angels
Conceived by Stephen Goldberg
Staged by Allan Nicholls
With: Charles Papasoff, R. Bill Gagnon, Stephen Goldberg, Paul Schnabel, and Genevra MacPhail
June 6–8 (Thurs–Sat) and June 12–15 (Wed–Sat), 2013; All shows 8 PM.
From the Playwright: “This is not a “play,” more like a happening, bringing artists together to make a new form of performance. It’s a dedication to the lost ones, the ones on the other side in this rain drop of a life and the ones waiting to be there, in no-place. No Walls means transparent, without geometry, mystical, avoiding logic, and The Off Center is a place to experiment, take chances, fly on the magic of angels and devils. Every moment is danger and possible bliss, with its sex, love, terror, and intoxication.”
Come to Off Center for the Dramatic Arts to experience this trans-arts event!
Tickets, $15.00 at the door (check or cash only), or purchase in advance online at Brown Paper Tickets by clicking the button below.

David Schein's Daring comedy,
|
Schein says: I was sketching out solo shows in the Berkeley studio and wanted to do a riff in which I was a woman, so I got on a bra and a dress and started trying to move as if I had a woman’s body, and to speak as if I was a woman – whatever that means. Immediately I became the biggest “queen” you could imagine, meaning a gay stereotype. But that didn’t fit either, this was San Francisco in the eighties, I had a lot of gay friends, they weren’t all queens, some acted and looked more “manly” than straight old me, so where did that leave me trying to play a woman? Then I realized that there were a lot of different flavors of gender in a person just waiting to come out, gay, straight, male, female, butch, top, bottom and more - and that everybody was their own unique cocktail of sexual identities. In one afternoon I thought up a story tying together all the personas within me and all the self-awareness trends of the time. I improvised the show that night. The rest is Butch history.
Note from Earth:
"A swan song for the planet..."
– Chicago Tribune
"...an extended performance poem on the nature of love, the earth, and the universe. ...rich images and language."
– Chicago Reader
Schein says: A 15 minute, lyrical, funny and sad obituary for the ‘barbecued cue ball” that Nisbet calls Earth, full of physics, wry sci-fi and winsome yearning for an evaporated girlfriend who is “such a gas.” Jim wrote “Note” and I first performed it in 1983 long before the term “global warming” was ever coined. Now, after 30+ years, revisiting it, I find its relevance astonishing and spooky, while the language is star-struck, as sweet and beautiful as “points and specs of light against a deep black and blue universe.”
Warning: “Out Comes Butch” has sexual content and language that may offend - for mature audiences only.
Admission: $12 cash or check at the door.

Heat & Hot Water Productions is proud to present...
Gruesome Playground Injuries
by Rajiv Joseph
Director by Mark Alan Gordon
Gruesome Playground Injuries is a peculiar, hilarious, yet deeply moving love story. Like gauze from a wound, it unwraps the tender moments when two lives intersect. Spanning 30 years, from a middle school dance, to an errant fireworks incident, to the wake of an uncaring parent, Kayleen and Doug continually hurt and heal themselves and each other. With an unlikely combination of snappy dialogue and horrifying accidents, this play cuts into and reveals the gross and icky business of love and life.
"...two brilliant performances that create some of the darkest and funniest moments you will ever see on stage." -Alex Brown, Seven Days
“It turns out two good actors and a fascinating script about the power of friendship is all you really need.” -Brent Hallenbeck, Burlington Free Press

A labyrinth of dreams and myth, time and the infinite, solitude and spleen. Asterion is one the names given to the Minotaur, the mythological figure half man half bull, condemned to spend his days trapped in a well-designed labyrinth. However, what happens when the labyrinth turns into a waiting room, and the myth into the body of an immigrant? Asterion talks about existing in two places: past and present, dreams and memory, joy and fear. And with the help of Jorge Luis Borges, the play also inquires deeply about solitude, frustration, utopias and the numberless contradictions that form our own labyrinths and stories.” Follow Asterion at www.theatremosaicmond.net.

winds of change
by Lesley Becker
Winds of Change is a drama about a family transformed as wind energy towers go up on a mountain ridge. Written by Vermont playwright Lesley Becker, the play is set in a town enmeshed in heated controversy as their rural community undergoes momentous changes during construction of a large-scale utility project.
The play examines the impact on the lives of families living close by the wind towers, and the tension between competing values. Community integrity and a beloved way of life are weighed against the looming threat of climate change and the real need for renewable energy.
Each character has hopes and dreams - the new neighboring wind power utility impacts their future in unimaginable ways.
Annette Smith, executive director of Vermonters for a Clean Environment describes the play as having “powerful insights into a changing landscape”.
This production features Bob Carmody as the father, Emily Lyons as the daughter, Karen Geiger as the neighbor, Charles Yarwood as the son, Mary Scripps as the company representative, Jayden Choquette as the returning veteran and Johannes Garrett as the town board chair. Please note: the production will have flashing lights.
Tickets $12 at the door tickets (cash or check only) or in advance at http://windsofchange.brownpapertickets.com (online tickets, $13.41).
Box office opens at 7:00 p.m.
