and exploring the wonders of the imagination!
Are you a lover of dystopian fantasy? Always wanted to step into a new and magical world? Come join the Hour-Glass Youth Theatre’s summer production of Shakespeare’s ‘As You Like It’. The play follows a young woman and her best friend as they flee a society in ruins from a government run on wealth and an imbalance of power. Love blossoms as paths cross, mischief abounds, people grow and change. While on the crumbling streets of the city, society is losing its humanity, the world outside reveals a vast beauty that may be able to heal the chaos. A sort of dystopian Robin Hood tale. We will have two weeks of rehearsals followed by a week of performances on tour at local libraries, senior centers, and other locations. Lots of fun, games, and helping to weave this wonderful tale!

A midsummer night's dream
performed by vermont suitcase company
The Vermont Suitcase Company is wrapping up its two-week tour at Off Center. This rowdy, fast-paced production has garnered rave reviews as it has worked its way through various Vermont venues:
"Shakespeare comedies are often presented as dry museum pieces. I cannot ever recall laughing so much as at Vermont Suitcase Company’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”. The presentation was so fresh you would’ve believed it was penned yesterday. You’ll forget the dozen other performance the you may have seen, as this is a new standard."
"This performance is fantastic!!!! The sides of my jaw ached from smiling and laughing. Wonderful, zany acting!"
" I just saw your performance here in Brattleboro tonight! It was far and away the most entertaining Shakespeare I have seen in years! I laughed out loud! And as I walked out, everyone -every single person I overheard talking - was saying things like "amazing," "fantastic," "I loved, loved, loved it!" Thank you so much!"

OFF CENTER WANTS TO SHOWCASE YOUR WORK
For eight years, Off Center for the Dramatic Arts (Off Center, the OC) has worked to provide a home for independent theater and performance in Burlington. For the second year, we want to celebrate our community with a special two-week festival doing what we love best: presenting vibrant local theatre and performing artists.
CALL FOR ARTISTS – SPRING OPEN ARTIST SHOWCASE
What is the SPRING OPEN ARTIST SHOWCASE?
The Spring Open Artist Showcase is a two-week festival running May 31 - June 9, 2018. Four Vermont artists or companies selected by lottery will each present a 60-minute show on a double bill for one weekend at Off Center for the Dramatic Arts, with performance rental, technical support and group festival promotion organized by Off Center volunteers. Each company will receive a third of the box office proceeds from the weekend of their performances.
Who Can Apply?
All theatre and performing artists/companies in Vermont are eligible and encouraged to apply. The four productions will be selected at a public lottery held Friday, March 16th, location TBA.
There is no application fee, but each artist or company can submit only one application.
How does the Showcase Lottery Work?
There are four 60-minute production slots available: one slot is reserved for a solo show: two are reserved for companies and artists who have worked with Off Center in the past (renters, group festival participants, board members, etc): the final slot is held for companies or artists who are new to the OC community. The festival producers reserve the right to adjust this guideline.
All completed applications received by 5:00 PM on Friday, March 9th will be placed in a lottery, with a public drawing held Friday, March 16th, location TBA. We will also draw a waiting list.

What Do the Showcase Artists Get?
- A sixty-minute production slot, as part of a double bill running for one weekend in June with no rental fees
- Promotion in all festival marketing run by Off Center volunteers, including social media, posters, handbills and all the media coverage we can muster
- One-third of the box office proceeds for the weekend of your performance. Each weekend of the festival the proceeds will be split three ways - between the two companies producing and Off Center as presenter. Communal promotional costs not covered by sponsorship or donations will be taken off the top
- Access to Off Center’s theatre for one full day and evening in the week leading up to the performance to run a full technical rehearsal
- Basic technical support using the standard lighting plot and audio playback system
What Are the Showcase Artists’ Responsibilities?
- All selected works must be produced by the company as a final presentation product, not a workshop - actors are expected to be off-book, and performances should be rehearsed for a minimum of two weeks before the performance dates. Off Center will be the presenting organization, not the individual show producers
- Producing representatives must attend at least two production meetings and one technical meeting in the weeks before the festival.
- Selected companies/artists must liaise with the festival producers and participate in preparing and distributing promotional materials, including online promotions.
- All set and technical requirements must be small, with a maximum of a 10-minute load in/strike time. There is minimal storage available at Off Center, and all shows will be set up and struck each performance. Shows with complicated technical cues will be required to provide their own board operators. Simple shows can be run by the event stage manager.
