Off Center is on the move!
On May 31, a group of amazing community volunteers helped us move into our new space. We are located in the same building, but one suite over! Our new mailing address is 294 North Winooski Avenue, Suite 116A , Burlinton VT 05401. Our email and contact information will all stay the same . Check out the slide show below of the move so far:
Next Phase: Fit-up
Now that we are moved into Suite 116A, the work is on to set up a brand new flexible black box performance studio. We are in the space formerly occupied by North End Studios B and C. This month we will be working hard, painting, setting up our tech, building a new stage floor, and preparing to open our doors for performance in July!
Support our Move
We welcome your volunteer help! If you would like to be included in work party invitations (painting, installing the grid, floor etc), email [email protected] and request to be on the volunteer email chain
We are also raising money in a campaign to cover the costs of the move. All told, the move is projected to cost us $5000. All the labor is volunteer (excepting technical electrical installations), but the necessary materials have hard price tags. Every dollar donated will help us cover those costs and make the new performance studio a perfect haven for creation and performance.
Jason Lorber in:
The SantaLand Diaries
by David Sedaris
adapted by Joe Mantello
December 18, 19, 20 at 7:30 p.m.
December 22 at 2:00 p.m.
More naughty than nice, David Sedaris’ essay, turned satirical hit play, “The SantaLand Diaries” will be touring four Vermont towns this December 2019.
Jason Lorber stars in the one-man show with performances in Burlington, Middlebury, Randolph, and Waterbury from December 13-to-22, 2019. Nope, it’s definitely not a traditional Christmas tale. But if you want to laugh your stockings off the fireplace, and enjoy classical, often evil satirical wit, then come. Bring your entire dysfunctional family. Although probably not your kids. No, definitely don’t bring kids. |
The show exposes the underbelly of life working as an elf at Macy’s Santaland, based on Sedaris’ first-hand experience. A favorite of National Public Radio (NPR) and a frequent performer in Vermont, Sedaris had his “SantaLand Diaries” essay grow into a play by Joe Mantello, which has since been featured in cities across America as an annual event since 1996.

The Stranger Play Festival
short and strange plays by women
Thursday September 19 - Saturday September 21, 7:30 p.m.
Sunday September 22 - 2:00 p.m.
The Stranger Play Festival
four short plays about strangeness and strangers. Statistics still reflect a huge disparity of female voices in the theater industry despite research identifying a majority of post-secondary theater students and audiences are women. “We wanted our festival to address current gender issues as well as provide an opportunity to introduce female characters and perspectives”, said local Vermont playwright Jeanne Beckwith. “We hope the impact will be well-received and far-reaching.” Addressing this under representation is a goal of The Stranger Play Festival, to highlight the stories of women by women, using the idea of ‘stranger’ as a point of inspiration and unifying American and Canadian artists. The playwrights hail from different North American locales; Elizabeth Flanagan from San Francisco, Hortense Gerardo from Boston, Alex Karolyi from Toronto and Jeanne Beckwith from Vermont. Directed by Monica Callan, Tess Holbrook, Kim Ward, Sarah Venooker. |

Visions For the End of the World
A solo performance by Scott Crandall
One Show Only: Saturday July 6, 8:00 p.m.
Tickets: $10
"Visions for the End of the World" begins with a showman who welcomes the audience to the pageant he is about to present: a performance of a doomsday prophet's series of apocalyptical visions. The performance of these visions ranges from energetic dance routines, to desperate prayer, to sea shanties and shipwrecks, each tied together with poetic dialogue, vigorous physicality, and delicately crafted stage images. Though dark and strange in moments, the 40 minute piece is accessible and searching: an open invitation to look toward the future honestly, empathetically, gratefully.
Scott Crandall is a performance artist, musician, and gardener in the Detroit area. After earning an AA in Theater from Lansing Community College and a BFA in Theater Direction from the University of Michigan, he apprenticed with Detroit performance company The Hinterlands, and now incorporates elements of their movement training as a central part of his creative practice. Scott also performs with Maddy Rager as the dance/performance art duo “Thank You So Much For Coming,” looking for a nexus between absurdity, research, and politics to craft bizarre, thoughtful, and often funny works.

Closing night - a big freaking celebration of off center
nine years of making theatre in the garage
Everyone, come out to Off Center on SATURDAY MAY 18th for a big CLOSING NIGHT PARTY! For nine years Off Center brought art and life to a disused loading dock in the Old North End - and we've loved every minute of every show. Everyone who has ever appeared on that stage or enjoyed our community is welcome at this event (BYO) and is welcome to join the set list of performers. COME OUT AND ROAR FROM THAT STAGE ONE LAST TIME!
But don't despair! Off Center is the community that makes the venue - and we are going to make a new studio venue NEXT DOOR! We will be moving to the space currently known as North End Studios B and C, and we will continue to make performance and rehearsal space AFFORDABLE for the performing artists of Burlington and Vermont!

Other Minds
by Margot lasher
Directed by Margo Whitcomb
With Susan Palmer, Tyler Rackliffe, Rick Ames and Tia Stivala
A human learns ancient truths and wisdom from her dog as they unpack puzzling questions: a dog's view of time, life and afterlife as well as mysterious human behaviors like "picking up after your dog." The human is a journalist who has an assignment in Japan and plans to leave her dog alone with a stranger. The dog champions the position that they are better equipped to meet life's dangers (spanning chipmunks to climate change) together, not separated . Other Minds is the world premiere of a poignant and funny meditation on life, companionship, play and bones by the award winning Vermont playwright, Margot Lasher

Nimble swift
by Meghan McClure and Austin Smith (of Camp circus collective)
Meghan McClure and Austin Smith have both been immersed in circus from a young age. They recently met in Burlington where they helped build the CAMP Circus Collective - part of the growing circus community in Burlington that always welcomes new members. (If you are interested, they meet Fridays 6:30-9:00 at the Aikido on Pine Street.) There, they push the limits of their own abilities, while also teaching each other new skills and techniques. This piece is a collaboration that has been waiting to happen. They are excited to be performing their mix of juggling, acro, dance, and just general happiness for the first time here in Burlington!
Austin has been a performing juggler for 5 years. He got his start on Church Street in Burlington. In the past year, he has performed at juggling festivals in Ontario, New York and Pennsylvania. He now prefers being able to control the conditions of lighting and weather to the rawness and unpredictability of street theater. Austin was recently hired by Circus Smirkus as a juggling coach for their camps this summer. He intends to continue sharing his love of circus on stage with local audiences as well as teaching future generations of jugglers.
|
Meghan is a generalist contemporary circus artist who grew up performing and training in Southern NH. She is graduating this year from the University of Vermont where she has been pursuing her interest of mixing dance and circus- mainly juggling- to create a different and more personal style of juggling. She loves performing (even though she is a bit scared of it) and hopes to continue to push her artistic limits in the studio and on stage.

The Factory of ideas
Poetry Reading by Antonello Borra
At 6:30 PM on April 11th at Off Center for the Dramatic Arts Poet Antonello Borra will read from his new book ‘The Factory of Ideas,” translated by Anis Memon and published by Fomite Press. Borra writes, “The 77 individuals whose voices channeled here are, or rather were, real people. Like my grandfather, they were all victims of an idea of “normality” that did not include them and therefore secluded them, confining their bodies to a cruel and repressive institution. Surviving the “insane asylums” until 1978, when the Basaglia Law finally closed them, was almost always at the expense of one’s sanity.”
Antonello Borra lives in Burlington and teaches Italian at the University of Vermont. His other volumes of poetry are Frammenti di tormenti prima parte) (Longo: 2000), (Frammenti di tormenti (seconda parte) (Lietocolle: 2006), and the two illustrated bilingual Italian-English Alphabetabestiario. |
CALL FOR ARTISTS – SPRING OPEN ARTIST SHOWCASE
OFF CENTER WANTS TO SHOWCASE YOUR WORK
Off Center for the Dramatic Arts is excited to launch the 3rd Annual Spring Open Artist Showcase. For nine years, Off Center for the Dramatic Arts (Off Center, OC) has worked to provide a home for independent theatre and performance in Burlington. We want to celebrate our community with a special two-week festival doing what we love best: presenting vibrant local theatre and performing artists.
What is the SPRING OPEN ARTIST SHOWCASE?
The Spring Open Artist Showcase is a two-week festival running April 25-May 4, 2019. Four Vermont artists or companies selected by lottery will each present a 60-minute show on a double bill for one weekend at Off Center for the Dramatic Arts, with performance rental, technical support, and group festival promotion organized by Off Center volunteers. Each company will receive a third of the box office proceeds from the weekend of their performances.
Who Can Apply?
All theatre and performing artists/companies in Vermont are eligible and encouraged to apply. The four productions will be selected at a public lottery held Friday, February 22th. There is no application fee, but each artist or company can submit only one application per category (solo or group).
How does the Showcase Lottery Work?
There are four 60-minute production slots available. The lottery will be broken down into four categories:
All completed applications received by 5:00 PM on Friday, February 15 will be placed in a lottery, with a public drawing held Friday, February 22. We will also draw a waiting list.

How does the Showcase Lottery Work?
There are four 60-minute production slots available. The lottery will be broken down into four categories:
- The first drawing will pull from all solo artist applications.
- The second drawing will pull from group applications who have produced work at OC before, as a way to give back to the community of artists that OC has built.
- The third drawing will pull from group applications that have never produced work at OC before, as a way of expanding our reach to new artist groups.
- The final drawing is a “Second chance” drawing, when ALL the applications that were NOT selected are thrown back into the jaw for one last pull. It complements the ethos of OC: chaos, community, and a little extra luck.
All completed applications received by 5:00 PM on Friday, February 15 will be placed in a lottery, with a public drawing held Friday, February 22. We will also draw a waiting list.
What Do the Showcase Artists Get?
- A sixty-minute production slot, as part of a double bill running for one weekend in April or the first weekend in May with no rental fees
- Promotion in all festival marketing run by Off Center volunteers, including social media, posters, handbills and all the media coverage we can muster
- One-third of the box office proceeds for the weekend of your performance. Each weekend of the festival the proceeds will be split three ways - between the two companies producing and Off Center as presenter. Communal promotional costs not covered by sponsorship or donations will be taken off the top
- Access to Off Center’s theatre for one full day and evening in the week leading up to the performance to run a full technical rehearsal
- Basic technical support using the standard lighting plot and sound playback system
What Are the Showcase Artists’ Responsibilities?
- All selected works must be produced by the company as a final presentation product, not a workshop - actors are expected to be off-book, and performances should be rehearsed for a minimum of two weeks before the performance dates. Off Center will be the presenting organization, not the individual show producers
- Producing representatives must attend at least two production meetings and one technical meeting in the weeks before the festival
- Selected companies/artists must liaise with the festival producers and participate in preparing and distributing promotional materials, including online promotions
- All set and technical requirements must be small, with a maximum of a 10-minute load in/strike time. There is minimal storage available at Off Center, and all shows will be set up and struck each performance. Shows with complicated technical cues will be required to provide their own board operators. Simple shows can be run by the event stage manager

Constellations
presented by green room productions
Constellations
By Nick Payne Directed by Joanne Greenberg Starring Dominic Spillane and Maren Langdon Spillane In Constellations, the principles of string theory give a love story an epic twist in a play about time, probability, and the power of human connection. Following successful performances in Warren, Montpelier, Woodstock, and Waterbury, Green Room Productions' Constellations will be performing at Off Center for the Dramatic Arts March 14-17. Thursday, March 14 @ 7:30 PM - PAY WHAT YOU CAN Friday, Mar. 15 @ 7:30 PM Saturday, Mar. 16 @ 7:30 PM Sunday, Mar. 17 @ 2:00 PM |
Physicist Marianne meets beekeeper Roland at a party. They go for a drink ... or perhaps they don't. Marianne's engaged ... or perhaps Roland is married. Or maybe they're both single. Nick Payne's smash Broadway hit play (in which Jake Gyllenhaal played Roland) takes this chance encounter between two lost souls and opens the door to the infinite possibilities of their relationship. Breathlessly navigating through the spellbinding and romantic journey of being in love, Constellations looks at how the tiniest change in the detail of our lives can lead us on completely different paths.

The play focuses on the perpetrators and their wives, racism, and members of the Ku Klux Klan. It is an amazing story that stands the test of time. The play possesses incredible emotion, joy and a cathartic nature that cannot be explained. It is a true metaphysical journey colliding with brutal reality — misogyny, racism and escapism, all rolled up into one. |
