Call For Artists: Spring Open Artist Showcase 2020
OFF CENTER WANTS TO SHOWCASE YOUR WORK
Off Center for the Dramatic Arts is excited to launch the 4rd Annual Spring Open Artist Showcase. For ten years, Off Center for the Dramatic Arts (Off Center, OC) has worked to provide a home for independent theatre and performance in Burlington. We want to celebrate our community with a special two-week festival doing what we love best: presenting vibrant local theatre and performing artists.
What is the SPRING OPEN ARTIST SHOWCASE?
The Spring Open Artist Showcase is a two-week festival running April 23 - May 4, 2020. Four Vermont artists or companies selected by lottery will each present a 60-minute show on a double bill for one weekend at Off Center for the Dramatic Arts, with performance rental, technical support, and group festival promotion organized by Off Center volunteers. Each company will receive a third of the box office proceeds from the weekend of their performances.
Who Can Apply?
All theatre and performing artists/companies in Vermont are eligible and encouraged to apply. All types of performance are encouraged to apply. The four productions will be selected at a public lottery held Friday, February 21th. There is no application fee, but each individual artist or company can submit only one application.
How does the Showcase Lottery Work?
There are four 60-minute production slots available. The lottery will be broken down into four categories:
All completed applications received by 5:00 PM on Wednesday, February 19 will be placed in a lottery, with a public drawing held Friday, February 21. We will also draw a waiting list.

How does the Showcase Lottery Work?
There are four 60-minute production slots available. The lottery will be broken down into four categories:
- The first drawing will pull from all solo artist applications.
- The second drawing will pull from group applications who have produced work at OC before, as a way to give back to the community of artists that OC has built
- The third drawing will pull from group applications that have never produced work at OC before, as a way of expanding our reach to new artist groups.
- The final drawing is a “Second chance” drawing, when ALL the applications that were NOT selected are thrown back into the jaw for one last pull. It complements the ethos of OC: chaos, community, and a little extra luck.
All completed applications received by 5:00 PM on Wednesday, February 19 will be placed in a lottery, with a public drawing held Friday, February 21. We will also draw a waiting list.
What Do the Showcase Artists Get?
- A sixty-minute production slot, as part of a double bill running for one weekend in June with no rental fees
- Promotion in all festival marketing run by Off Center volunteers, including social media, posters, handbills and all the media coverage we can muster
- One-third of the box office proceeds for the weekend of your performance. Each weekend of the festival, the proceeds will be split three ways - between the two companies producing and Off Center as presenter. Communal promotional costs not covered by sponsorship or donations will be taken off the top.
- Access to Off Center’s theatre for one full day and evening in the week leading up to the performance to run a full technical rehearsal
- Basic technical support using the standard lighting plot and sound playback system.
What Are the Showcase Artists’ Responsibilities?
- All selected works must be produced by the company as a final presentation product, not a workshop - actors are expected to be off-book, and performances should be rehearsed for a minimum of two weeks before the performance dates. Off Center will be the presenting organization, not the individual show producers
- Producing representatives must attend at least two production meetings and one technical meeting in the weeks before the festival
- Selected companies/artists must liaise with the festival producers and participate in preparing and distributing promotional materials, including sharing online promotions, emails etc. Artists must also be available for media interviews and promotional photographs/videos.
- All set and technical requirements must be small, with a maximum of a 10-minute load in/strike time. There is minimal storage available at Off Center, and each show will be set up and struck each performance. Shows with complicated technical cues will be required to provide their own board operators. Simple shows can be run by the event stage manager
